Created in Brussels in 2015, Azmari is a twisting musical journey that fuses ethiojazz, psychgroove, funk and dub. Azmari draw on influences including Mulatu Astatke, Cymande, the Heliocentrics, the Budos band, Fela Kuti, John Berberian and much more.
An Azmari, literally "one who praises" in Amharic, is an Ethiopian singer-musician, comparable to the European bard or the West African griot Read more often accompanied with a masenqo - one-stringed fiddle or krar - lyre, two traditional ethiopian instruments.
Heavely influenced by the Ethiopiques, ten days performing in Istanbul opened the band's ears to the turkish sound and rythm from the 60's. Along with learning instruments as berimbao, kaval and saaz, the Azmari sound transformed into a rebellious, unrelenting and mesmerizing experience.
